Google is developing a cancer and heart attack-detecting pill

Google is developing a new pill containing thousands of magnetic nanoparticles, which is a new field in medical technology, that is able to detect whether an individual has a disease or illness such as cancer or an imminent heart attack before any symptoms become visible, Illnesses now calm only be treated if symptoms of the disease is present because it confirms whether they have it how ever the pill if successfully developed it'll be able to be treated before it starts to harm the body. The pill is still in the very early stages and the lab developing the pill already has around 100 scientists working in Googles X Lab. The scientists still have to discover how many nanoparticles are required and the coating to make it bind to cells still need to be developed. Google have made the medical study public because they require other medicine lab to collaborate on the product and help with the developments.

- More than £100bn a year is spent on the National Health Service in Britain.

- Magnetic particles are approximately 10,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair.

- Because the cores of these particles are magnetic, you can call them somewhere and ask them what they saw using devices like the smart watch.

The development of the product is a big step in the field of medicine however it is just another big money making pill just like any other, It doesn't actually help cure an illness that can be bought once, its a pill that needs to be bought repetitively thus resulting in Google making a lot on money, Medicine developments is one of the richest work fields in the world and for Google to join this industry is a very good step financially if they are successful.

What happens to your Facebook account when you die?

The article explain the process in which a profile page of a social site like facebook has to go through to become memorialised after the announced death of a family member. Facebook has a waiting period of 6 months for one account to be processed to a memorialisation, Statistic research by Nathan Lustig show that 3,000,000 facebook users will die this year dividing up to 60.000 a month, The author write the the 6 month waiting period is unacceptable if it take that long to process one account. the article also focused on other option that the deceased's family member can take including deleting the account all together resulting in the loss of profile content including pictures ad videos etc. However to preserve them, which is a very long process, legal steps must be taken as its a privacy issue and would require a court order.

- No one is allowed to log in to the account
- You can’t change, add to or delete existing content, which includes adding or removing friends
- Automated activities, such as daily quotes or horoscopes, are stopped
- Memorialised accounts don’t appear in “public spaces” such as birthday reminders, People You May Know, or searches
- Memorialised accounts can only be accessed by the user’s confirmed friends
The process for memorialising accounts should be quicker as institutions such as facebook are very successful, it has more than enough money to update software and machines to speed up the process or even the labour, this could be increased drastically as the labour work is cheap. Although the process of memorialising the account isn't necessary it would be much easier on the family member if the stress of going through the process is more simple and straight forward.

My journalism lectures are free from any hint of anti-Murdoch bias

The article by Roy Greenslade focused on lecture at two universities in Sydney, Australia. Sharri Marksons the Media Editor of the Australian attended both of the lecture at both of the Universities and stated that, "students were being led to form a critical view of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp". Markson also stated that the lecture bout News Corp were indoctrinated meaning that the views being portrayed by the lecturer were not to be questioned.

-  Murdoch has called the NBN "a ridiculous idea"

-  The Australian judged the first rollout of NBN, in Tasmania, to be "shambolic" and "abysmal"

The Lecture of Sydney university should have made the lecture a unbiased report on News Corp enabling the students to form their own opinions and created a controversial view on the subject and thus intriguing the students to do further research on the subject

Google says latest search changes will 'visibly affect' piracy site rankings

This article focuses of the previous claim on Google stating that they haven't done enough to stop piracy site from being at the top of the sites. They (Google) promised in 2012 that piracy sites will be demoted in the rankings on the list but however no significant change was seen. Now in 2014 Google states that the piracy fights report has been updated and published. Googles Senior Copyright Counsel Katherine Oyama said Google has been testing new ad formats that show links to legal digital music and video services when people search using the keywords including download, free and watch and removing terms from its autocomplete feature if they "return results with many DMCA demoted sites.

Oyama did not give details on which sites are being demoted, or by how much their demotions will affect their rankings

How Google Fights Piracy report, which was originally launched in September 2013 as a defence against claims by music and film

- Google promised to put the piracy report in 2012 but failed to do so

Google should have put the piracy report to use a long time ago as it means between the time that Google stated they would do so and the present Film institutions have lost millions and would essentially effect the ratings and states determining how well the film would have done in sales and revenue.

17 Reasons It’s Way Better To Date A Dog Person

This article give 17 reason it's better to date a dog person and in the form of a list attached with pictures and gifs it provides information concerning the subject in of these lists was 'they cuddle better' although uneccessrery information it's structured in a way that it's easy for people tho understand clearly

I think the listicels are dumbing people down further than shows such as reality tv as it doesn't allow them to read properly or learn any new vocabulary that forces them to search up the word to understand it

The rise and rise of UGC

  • What is meant by the term ‘citizen journalist’?
Citizen journalists is based upon citizen having an active role in collecting analysing and reporting the news such as creating blogs.

  • What was one of the first examples of news being generated by ‘ordinary people’?
The first example of UGC news was in 1991 when an person liking from their windows saw an attack on an African American man named Rodney King after a high speed chase. This was to do the rise of technology, at the time it was more common to have a video camera as more people were able to afford them. The video then received mass publicity as it was featured in prime-time news and became and international media sensation.

  • List some of the formats for participation that are now offered by news organisations.
Apps
Blogs
Polls
Facebook
Twitter
Phones
Tablets

  • What is one of the main differences between professionally shot footage and that taken first-hand (UGC)?
UGC is a more believable source of the truth because it was filmed by a normal person like us although the professionally shot videos are too the UGC is more emotive.

  • What is a gatekeeper?
Gate keeper are the big institutions consisting of professional Editors and Producers that control what is being shown on their news channels.
  • How has the role of a gatekeeper changed?
Gatekeeper have lost some of the power they had over the audience because the UGC content such as blogs on the Internet are much more convenient for the user.
  • What is one of the primary concerns held by journalists over the rise of UGC?
One of the biggest concern for them is their jobs, if they are being taken by citizen journalist producing this content for the institution probably for a lower price then journalist are boys to lose their jobs.

Examples:
Having caught Rodney King, an African-American, after a high speed chase, the officers surrounded him, tasered him and beat him with clubs. The event was filmed by an onlooker from his apartment window. The home-video footage made prime-time news and became an international media sensation, and a focus for complaints about police racism towards African-Americans. Four officers were charged with assault and use of excessive force, but in 1992 they were acquitted of the charges. This acquittal, in the face of the video footage which clearly showed the beatings, sparked huge civil unrest. There were six days of riots, 53 people died, and around 4000 people were injured. The costs of the damage, looting and clear-up came in at up to a billion dollars.

The natural disaster of the Asian Tsunami on December 26th 2004 was another turning point for UGC. Much of the early footage of events was provided from citizen journalists, or ‘accidental journalists,’ providing on-the-spot witness accounts of events as they unfolded. Tourists who would otherwise have been happily filming holiday moments were suddenly recording one of the worst natural disasters in recent times. In addition, in the days after the disaster, social networking sites provided witness accounts for a world-wide audience, helped survivors and family members get in touch and acted as a forum all those involved to share their experiences.

The London bombings on July 7th 2005 provided another opportunity for citizen journalists to influence the mainstream news agenda. No one was closer to events than those caught up in the bombings, and the footage they provided from their mobile phones was raw and uncompromising. This first-hand view, rather than professionally shot footage from behind police lines, is often more hard-hitting and emotive. An audience used to relatively unmediated reality through the prevalence of reality TV can now see similarly unmediated footage on the news.

The desire for everyone to tell their own story and have their own moment of fame may explain the huge popularity of Facebook, MySpace and other such sites. It also had a more negative outcome in the package of writings, photos and video footage that 23-year-old Seung-Hui Cho, an undergraduate at Virginia Tech, mailed into NBC News. Between his first attack, when he shot two people, he sent the package from a local post office, before going on to kill a further 30 people. In his so-called ‘manifesto’ Cho showed his paranoia and obsession, likening himself to Jesus Christ. The reporting of the terrible events at Virginia Tech that day was also affected by citizen journalism, and the footage that student Jamal Albarghouti shot on his mobile phone video camera. Rather than concentrate on saving his own life, he recorded events from his position lying on the ground near the firing. The footage, available on YouTube and CNN brought events home to a worldwide audience. We now expect passers-by, witnesses, or even victims, to whip out their camera phones and record events, an instinct almost as powerful as that to save their own or others’ lives. Perhaps the news now seems old-fashioned and somehow staged if it lacks the raw, grainy low-quality footage provided by citizen journalists.

Twitter and flickr came to the forefront during the Mumbai bombings in India in late November 2008. As bombs exploded across the city, the world’s media got up-to date with events through reports on Twitter and Flickr. There were questions raised, however, that by broadcasting their tweets, people may have been putting their own and others’ lives at risk.

It was on Twitter again that the story of the Hudson River plane crash on January 15th 2009 was broken to the world. With a dramatic picture of a plane half sinking in the river, and passengers crowded on the wing awaiting rescue Janis Krun tweeted:

“There’s a plane in the Hudson. I’m on the ferry going to pick up the people. Crazy.

The picture is still available on Twitpic, under ‘Janis Krun’s tweet.’ While national news organisations quickly swung into action, it was the citizen journalist, empowered by social networking sites, that first broke the story.

Theory (Audience Reception etc.)

Benefits to Institutions:
The more the uses of online platforms grow the more the big institutions gain revenue due to the amount of visits to the page. Also, the larger the ratings on the site the more money would be brought in from advertising as companies would pay to advertise on the site.

Benefits to Audience:
Using Social Media and blogs the audience is able to Post their views and opinion on specific subject with-out having to use big media institution, using media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Blogger, which may receive mass amount of publicity for free by the platforms ability to share, retweet or repost the views and opinions of the audience.

Wider issues and Debates:
What effect does this have of professional journalist of the citizen journalist are able to post their footage online

Social:
The audience are able to use social media as the main platform for
Historical:
Economical:
Political:

Daily Record stops selling in Ireland after circulation slump

The Daily Records has recently stopped distribution of papers in the Irish republic the last issue of the paper sold was on the 11th October. Record's sales having slumped to fewer than 500 copies per day (469 on average during September, according to ABC figures). The publisher Trinity Mirror have yet to make a final decision to supply paper to the republic. The Daily Records have been losing circulation for the past 20 years.

-The Daily Record's sales having slumped to fewer than 500 copies per day.

-The Record sold almost 2,000 fewer copies in September than in August.

- Within Scotland the Record's average sale in September (202,831).

Trinity mirror should make a final decision and just stop distributing to the irish republic because its wa waste on money considering the cost for distribution and production where it could go to other areas that buy the paper such as soctland with a selling rate at 202,831 on average per month and irland only being 500 copies per day, roughly 15,000 per month, its obvious where the paper should be distributed.

Reddit secures $50m in fundraising from investors including Snoop Dogg

The article focuses on clash of the fundraising for reddit and the closure of the community the Fappening which was the subreddit that posted the celebrity nudes. Complaints arose stating that the two events were connected the CEO Yishan Wong denied any connection between the two. funding for the site came from venture capitalists and investors including rapper Snoop Dogg. Wong wanted 10% of the new shares to go to the users of reddit although they don't know how to do so the want to reward the user for their contributions.

- Reddit has secured $50m (£31m) in funding from venture capitalists and investors.

- The Fappening provided a home of sorts reportedly attracting more than 250m views in days.

- Reddit only has 60 odd workers under the company.

The funding for the site is good as it would enable them to upgrade their security on the site and enable them to hire more workers that can focus on looking for subreddits such as the fappening.

Revenge porn could lead to 14-year sentence, new guidelines clarify

This article is about newly established laws about 'revenge porn'. revenge porn is uploading images online of ex partners during a sexual act between the two during their relation with the intent of causing distress to the individual. New laws allow people to be prosecuted for this crime with a possible sentence of 14 years. The guidelines state that prosecution should not be brought under obscenity laws but on the basis of the menace and humiliation intended.

- Figures uncovered by the Press Association showed schoolgirls were among those targeted.

- Adults had been blackmailed into having sex with their tormentor after indecent.

- There were 149 allegations of crimes involving revenge pornography during the last two-and-a-half years.

The people that have upload the image should be prosecuted as they obviously have uploaded the image online with the intent to harm the being and is completely wrong. They should be treated the same as any other pornographic company that wants to upload celebrity sextapes, they should have confirmed rights over the content from the partner with a written confirmation signed by both partners before upload.

Iran blocks Instagram account of ‘rich kids’ showing off wealth in Tehran

A Instagram profile named "richkidsoftehran" has been banned in Iran due to 'vulgar' content. The content of the profile is in the name it portrays the lives of rick kids in tehran with images of Ferraris, Lamborghinis and most importantly parties which is the main reason as to why the account has been banned as it contains alcohol which is illegal to consume in Iran and women in western clothing, women are obligated to wear headscarves and in the images they're not.

- Photo-sharing service, attracted almost 100,000 followers

- A rival site, poorkidsoftehran, pokes fun at their rich counterparts

- richkidsoftehran also has had a page on Facebook

I think that despite the fact that alcohol is consumed in a islamic country the account shouldn't be banned from the public in Iran as it could inspire and spark some enthusiasm in the lives of the less fortunate and could help a lot of people if they look at the profile in that way. Women are obligated to wear headscarves, fair enough, but if the images are taken in a private location such as the homes of the account owner then there shouldn't be a problem.
