Should the campaign against Page 3 be abandoned?

The Rupert Murdoch's Tweeted about the page 3 campaign "Brit feminists bang on forever about page 3.  I bet never buy paper. I think old fashioned but readers seem to disagree". The article speaks on the history and the reason it was so popular prior to the internet revolution stating that images of naked women where hard to come by in the 70's and putting them in a newspaper did attract readers, however now image and videos can be found on-line and should now be removed because it's tasteless, demeaning to many and unnecessary. Although Murdoch agreed that it was old fashioned he went on to print the next issue with a page three model anyway to possibly show that he hasn't been pressured by the Feminist Campaign.

Interview
Barbara Ellen, Observer columnist

I respectfully disagree. The campaign against Page 3 should not be abandoned just because the Sun decided to blow a last-minute raspberry at supposed PC mores. Admittedly, there have been inconsistencies. I used to wonder: what’s really so different about a top-end glamour model such as Kathy Lloyd and fashion models on catwalks often wearing diaphanous blouses – a couple of leg inches? However, if Page 3 was dreary, dated, and offensive before, now it sits like a pathetic leering bare-breasted woolly mammoth amid modern enlightened sensibilities. It’s bizarre to defend it on the basis that there are “worse things” – there’s no sliding scale for institutionalised sexism. Nor does it matter that, compared to other pornography, the photos are “tame” or “lame” – women’s bodies are neither lame nor tame. The very passivity of Page 3 is offensive. That’s why the efforts of Harriet Harman and Clare Short (amid much vicious lampooning) were so important, and the fight must continue, right?

FSF Don’t you think those women have a right to choose whether they get their boobs out? The same right you have to choose not to buy the Sun? I find it odd that in the same few weeks we’ve been defending the right to offend with cartoons in Paris, people are seriously talking about how awful it is they’re offended by things that half of us have on our ribcages. If it’s nipples that upset, then why not tell breastfeeding mums to keep them away? If it’s women being objectified, why not complain about the vast numbers of celebrities from Kim Kardashian to Celebrity Big Brother reject Chloe Goodman who turn a buck out of it?

And if it’s the fact it’s in a newspaper but isn’t news, then why not turn the same fury on horoscopes, the gardening page, or cheap holiday offers? Admit it – the reason people don’t like Page 3 is snobbery. It’s that paper, run by that man, read by that sort of person, and you find the combination distasteful. Because if it was sexy boobs in newspapers there is a problem with, the campaign against it would have to take in every newspaper in Britain – including the Observer and the Guardian, who print their fair share.

BE True, it’s important to stay aware of hypocrisy, but the snobbery/autonomy arguments don’t wash. Page 3 is the Old Order – reeking of male dominance, of women as sexualised and neutralised objects (Stripping celebrities at least bring a sense of their public personalities). Breastfeeding needs nipples like a newspaper page doesn’t. As for free speech, and the contention that the campaign exacerbates the problem by making the Sun determined to hang on to Page 3 – the claim that “wimmin” (killjoy harridans) only make things worse. Where’s female free speech in that scenario?

FSF In that scenario women’s free speech is in a) baring their boobs if they want and b) complaining about it if they choose. How can we criticise Islamic State for insisting all women cover up, and the next, er, insist women cover up? How can we call Nigel Farage a dinosaur for saying he doesn’t want to see breastfeeding, and say we don’t like to see breasts? It’s got to the point where the No More Page 3 campaign is in danger of tying itself in knots. Someone somewhere will always be offended by something. And Page 3 was tame – it was Carry On Titties, and that’s all it was. Don’t you agree there are more serious issues for us to campaign on – the sexualisation of children, girls being encouraged to buy bras at eight years old, access to porn, the repression of women for spurious religious reasons?

BE Why should caring about one issue cancel out all others? It’s not just about the major wounds where sexist culture is concerned, it’s also about the paper cuts and how they mount up. Nor is it about forcing women to cover up, it’s about a major news outlet recognising that Page 3 is outdated insulting and tragic – Carry on Titties indeed? Do you have “titties” Fox? Or are you allowed actual breasts, because you’re a media professional with influence and power?

FSF I have titties, whammers, bazookas, fun bags, lady lumps, breasts, boobs or anything else you might want to call them. That’s the thing – boobs mean different things to different people, and the campaign for No More Page 3 is sort of insisting they must all mean the same to all of us – some sort of sacrosanct gland we may only expose when feeding, as through we were glossy, middle-class milkers. I think that’s futile, never mind silly, or dare I say it, offensive.

Why can’t I have my boobs, Page 3 girls have their tits, you have yours to call as you wish and all of us team up to tell our brothers that feminism is about having the right to choose?

BE This isn’t about puritanism, snobbery, or censorship, it’s about women being reduced to smutty sideshow turns within the context of family newspapers. Women exposing their breasts on news pages – it’s bizarre, not to mention insultingly easy. If people want porn, however “soft”, at least make them work for it. As you rightly point out, the world has moved on and Page 3 needs to jog on – it’s a tiresome and tired anachronism. That’s why I very much doubt whether any “hairy-arsed feminist

Twitter encourages 'verified' users to stop posting photos from Instagram

Twiter has encouraged Mega-stars on the social media site to post images directly to twitter instead of linkin it to instagram as it move the sites users from twitter to instagram, After the annual user figure count instagram showed a 300 million active users whereas twitter remained at 284 million, i has updated the site to be more like instagram adding the ability to use photofilters and has even allowed users to post 4 picture at once. A new feture will also be added called 'Native Video' which will allow users to record videos directly from the twitter app.

Instagram announced that it had more than 300 million active users in December 2014

Twitter’s most recent milestone of 284 million.

Twitter should look in to more unique ways of updating it's site to re attract the old users by providing them with a different form of service rather than trying to make itself more like other apps. This will enable twitter to gain more active users as they will want to at least try the new and unique feature.

What happens when most of China visits your website? It dies a horrible death

When a significant proportion of all the web traffic in China gets directed to one server that server dies a rapid death, Craig Hockenberry, the senior software engineer for developers Iconfactory, in the small university town of Greensboro, North Carolina, On Tuesday, woke up to discover that the main server for his company was receiving around 13,000 requests per second, /roughly a third of Google’s global search traffic and this traffic was coming from IP addresses located in China. Hockenberry said. “Clearly there was some kind problem with traffic being routed to the wrong place. The most likely candidate would, of course, be DNS”, He was forced to block all traffic coming from China in order to keep the site up and running

Google is now a more trusted source of news than the websites it aggregates

According to a global survey study of 27000 people, by Edelman a public relations firm, found the online search engines is a more trust worth source of news than traditional media, The biggest and most rusted is Google.Google does not actually report on anything, but instead serves up links to stories on a mix of other sites that users, apparently, trust less than the aggregator itself.

Google is no doubt the most powerful medium of the 21 century currently and the internet is the strongest media platform of the 21st century evident from the presented statistics in the image above. The reson the internet is preferred than traditional media is because it's has reliable site such as the Guardian, and the update of strorys are almost instant article that had been posted several minuets ago could be read by thousands of people arond the world and is another reason it can be accessed by anyone.

Learner Response

The inter may be considered as in-equal from a Marxist point of view as 5% of all websites accounted for 75% of user volume - Lin and Webster, This means that the minority of media producers always serve a majority of media consumers (Pareto's Law). Google is a dominating media platform across all. News Corps Chief executive Robert Thompson stated that google is too powerful. The search engines is the gate way to other websites and in sense without Google there would be a possible chance that other websites may be able to build a reputation similar to it. Google has also taken over the internet programmes as Google Chrome is the leading Browser. My case study shows that the US government demand for user search data has risen over 250% since 2005 and no longer has any privacy.

Identities and the Media: Reading the Riots

How did the language and selection of images in the coverage create a particular representation of young people?

The language and the pictures presented portrayed a negative representation on todays yout. showing that these people have no remorse and the psture in the images show this. The Mis-en-scene of the image adds to the negetivity as it's the uniform for these thugs.

Why does David Buckingham mention Owen Jones and his work Chavs: the demonization of the working class?

Buckingham mentioned Owen Jones as he pointed out that there is a new modernized Britain and argued that the working class has become an object of fear and ridicule

What is the typical representation of young people – and teenage boys in particular? What did the 2005 IPSOS/MORI survey find?

The survey found that 40% of articles the mentioned young people were focused on violence and 71% of that is described as having a negative tone.

How can Stanley Cohen’s work on Moral Panic be linked to the coverage of the riots?

The story of the riots spreading across the country and created a moral panic as the citizens of England were in fear of thugs harming or robbing them or their family

What elements of the media and popular culture were blamed for the riots?

The popular media culture for blame were Rap  music, Violent videogames and reality T.V.

How was social media blamed for the riots? What was interesting about the discussion of social media when compared to the Arab Spring in 2011?

Social media helped organize group to go out to riot or make plans to rob a specific jewelry shop. It also enabled the riots t spread across the county quicker. It's primary users were the same as the people involved in the riots and this emphasized the blame of the youth due to the fact the social media applications such as BBM were involved. Social media when it came t the Arab Springs was a democratic utility that enabled repressed people of the middle east to voice their opinion organize an take down a dictatorship.

The riots generated a huge amount of comment and opinion - both in mainstream and social media. How can the two-step flow theory be linked to the coverage of the riots?

When the people turned to social media they looked at the story from celebrities POV, the two step flow model can be used, as they voiced thier opinion on the social platform as opinion leaders with 'followers' and their opinions helped form the opinions of these follower as it may provide the with new ideas about the event.

Alternatively, how might media scholars like Henry Jenkins view the 'tsunami' of blogs, forums and social media comments? Do you agree that this shows the democratisation of the media?

Due to the ability of social media becoming more anonymous with sites such as ask.fm, I believe that social media shows a form of democratization as it allows people to take advantage or experience Freedom of Speech without restriction as they may be oppressed individuals.

What were the right-wing responses to the causes of the riots?

The right wing response to the cause was negative comparing them to the likes of animals and calling them Yobs

What were the left-wing responses to the causes of the riots?

The Left wing Blamed society and its social class and inequality factors

What are your OWN views on the main causes of the riots?

I believe that the riots started out as the protest against police brutality however as it spread through-out London and then the country it became more of the hunger for the youths need of riches due to a materialistic society

How can capitalism be blamed for the riots? What media theory (from our new/digital media unit) can this be linked to?

Capatilism can be blamed as social media and the freedom of speech enabled the riots to spread quickly and if these factor weren't involved could have been contained better. Also living in this materialistic society makes a majority believe that their character is build on the object of materialization and they begin to rob and steal with out remorse due to inequality and social class statuses.

Were people involved in the riots given a voice in the media to explain their participation?

The rioter opinions were not vioced in fact looked to be oppressed by the media. They were not given a vaiove firstly as it may have challenged Hegammnic views created by the media and news paper most of which are Right-winged papers.

What is your own opinion on the riots? Do you have sympathy with those involved or do you believe strong prison sentences are the right approach to prevent such events happening in future?

The riots were a mixed of several factors that blew the riots in to a larger scale the beginning of the riots in Tottenham started out as a violent protest for the oppressed in a so called democratic society. however my sympathy stayed there as for other even in my area were just a chance for people to rob steal and injure people with a smaller risk of being called as man people were condoning and participating in it.

'Cultural Marxism': a uniting theory for right wingers who love to play the victim

the Australian’s columnist Nick Cater, video game hate group #Gamergate, Norwegian mass shooter Anders Breivik and random blokes on YouTube Have invoked the spectre of cultural Marxism to account for the things they disapprove of such as Islamic immigrants communities, feminism and Bill Shorten. The story of cultural Marxism is also flexible and can be tailored to fit with the obsessions of a range of right-wing actors. As such, it’s one example of an idea from the extremes which has been mobilised by more mainstream figures and has dragged politics as a whole a little further right.

Anders Breivik killed young social democrats because he believed that their party was involved in a cultural Marxist plot to undermine traditional European values by means of mass immigration from the Islamic world.

It begins in the 1910s and 1920s (Marxism)

the conspiracy says, they promoted and even enforced ideas which were intended to destroy traditional Christian values and overthrow free enterprise: feminism, multiculturalism, gay rights and atheism.

LR

I've marked your essay - it's 29/48 which is a C so one grade above your target grade and gets you three credits!

LR (do this on a blog posting, with the feedback I've given you)...

·         You need to flesh out your essay with more specific examples, especially the section on UGC. Go back through and include some more in a separate posting, including from your NDM Guardian research.

·         Make sure it’s all your own work in future – you can write a very good essay!

Through the use of Social sites, pluralism is becoming more powerful as millions of people are being enabled to provide opinions through comment section and statuses showing evidence of a Pluralistic point of view and freedom of speech. This also allows deterioration of censorship as the audience is able to receive news that wouldn't be televised and that they are interested in. The police brutality that has been recognised through UGC by citizen journalism such as Rodney King a prime example of this as it was the first example of UGC and now using social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as an example of this police brutality has become a world wide controversial subject with victims such as Trayvon Martin and Mike Brown that due to the mass publication have touched the heart of rapper and have even gone as far as making several songs including legends such as Wu-Tang Clan. In New York a rebel brand called VLONE featuring the likes of Ian Conner and A$AP Rocky have started riots using social media like instagram to bring out fans to join them in the riots. Rupert Murdoch stated, “People are taking charge of their own lives and they read what they want” this shows example of the uses and gratification theory stating that people are able to make conscious choices about the media they consume and can conform, accommodate or reject (Gurevitch).  UGC enables the audience to portray the truth that the media may try to manipulate for their political benefit an example of this is the Police riots that the BBC manipulated despite being a non-biased news organisation.

Sony hackers may still have access to computer systems
Sony Entertainment is unable to confirm that hackers have been eradicated from its computer systems more than a month after the film studio was hit by a debilitating cyber-attack. The company came up with an old-style communications system based on a “phone tree” to relay updates on the hack from person to person. An old cache of BlackBerrys was also brought into action because the phones receive email via their own servers.

- “It took me 24 or 36 hours to fully understand that this was not something we were going to be able to recover from in the next week or two,” Lynton told the Wall Street Journal.

Apple faces lawsuit over storage space on iPhones and iPads

The article focuses of the Apple storage and misrepresentation of the amount of storage given with each iPhone due to the mass amount of storage taken up by the iOS 8 update. Two individuals from Miami Paul Orshan and Christopher Endara have brought a lawsuit, who claim they have bought iPhone and iPads in the last year advertised with 16 GB however when bought found that 23.1 % of the storage is taken up by the update

- For the devices, the shortfall ranges from 18.1-23.1%.
- The pair, who hope to turn the complaint into a class action, are seeking $5m (£3.3m) in damages and a trial by jury.
- Each gigabyte of storage Apple shortchanges its customers amounts to approximately 400-500 high-resolution photographs.

The company should create additional storage specifically for the updates and should keep it separate from the amount shown so the 16 GB is available and extra storage is available for the updates that cant be accessed for personal use.

Why Kelvin MacKenzie is such a strange 'new' columnist for the Sun Roy Greenslade

Kelvin MacKezie was a editor for the sun paper, he known for the publishing of a front page called "The Truth" about the 1989 Hillsborough tragedy that made the people of Liverpool boycott the page  and he then left to be hired again in 2005 as a columnist he quit in 2011 to work for the Daily Mail however was a bad experience for both and departed from the Daily Mail a year later in "mysterious circumstances". The sun have now hired him again during the inquest into the deaths of 96 victims. Rupert Murdoch once called MacKezie "my little Hitler"

- MacKenzie published his notorious front page (“The Truth”) about the 1989 Hillsborough tragedy
- Daily Telegraph dared to give him a column. It was pulled after just one effort following hostility from the paper’s sports writers.

My opinion of MacKenzie rehire to the sun may be to create a controversy so that News Corp. /Murdoch can make noise. He should stop writing in my opinion the front page for the Hillsborough Tragedy was disgusting

Traditional media more reliable – Federal Sec

The article talks about the current affirs in Borneo and includes the quotes from Abu Bakar Hassan about the traditional medias take on the issues vs the new medias take on it. Abu Bakar Hassan stated that to receive reliable information Traditional media is still relevant as "the challenge lies in the speed of the technology based social media" he also said that in current affairs only the news paper had correctly reported the event. He added, "proper media should remain sensitive to sensitive issues related to ethnicity, culture and such. These reports must not affect the harmony of the state"

- the government is also working on overcoming the constraints such as financial standing of a department that deters this from happening. This includes the past and current study of 400 schemes

I do agree with Hassan to an extent about traditional journalism being a more reliable source than online media however can be trust worth as not all stes have citizen journalist or wannabes, traditional media is a dying medium with decreasing umbers in news paper purchases and a decline in its media audience and new and digital media is taking over by a storm.

- The PSN has 110 million users
- was not restored until 28 December.
- Microsoft’s Xbox Live online gaming service was also targeted by the Lizard Squad’s attack but service was restored by Boxing Day.

It was good that Sony acknowledged the hack and apologized by providing offer but it wasn't enough they should have offered more to the users to keep them happy and the company need to upgrade their security, Microsoft was able to fix the hack two days earlier than Sony.

Facebook Inc (FB)’s CEO Ditched Traditional Media For Q&A Sessions, “Dislike” Button Nowhere In Picture
Facebook ditched the traditional media communication with the latest Q&A session and talks of the Dislike button whilst the session was talked about and Zuckerberg decided that it wasn't necessary he looked at it as a votiong mechanism which he though wasn't valuable
“I don’t think there needs to be a voting mechanism on Facebook [for] whether posts are good or bad, I don’t think that’s socially very valuable or good for the community. But the thing that I think is very valuable is that there are more sentiments that people want to express than just positivity or that they like something.”

- The shares of Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) are trading at $77.83.
- The social network accomplished the $200 billion market capitalization mark earlier this year.

The idea to decline the Dislike button was a good idea although the button would excited users the button would over time fade and forgotten, i think because it would stir too much controversy on the social site.

The article reveals information about the funding for the institution, the latest round of funding is $485.6 Million possibly valuing the company at more than $10bn, just over a year after the $3bn proposition by Facebook was made. It reveals possible investors taking part in the round. The latest round totals the round to just under $648 Million. According to reports from Bloomberg and TechCrunch it was suggested that Yahoo and venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufiels and Byers were involved in the round. Snapchat also launched the Advertisment - a 20 second trailer for the horror film Ouija, paid for by Universal Studios. The company has ambitions to become more that jus a messaging app for its predominantly young users by talking to other companies including BuzzFeed, Spotify, Vice and MailOnline to add music news and videos to a new section of its app called "Discover". In December Hollywood studio Sony Pictures had emails leaked which hinted at the companies ambition to turn the app in to a fully-fledged digital music service

- Messaging app Snapchat has raised its latest round of funding, $485.6m, value the US-based company at more than $10bn.
- Snapchat, which is thought to now have 200 million active users sending photos and videos to one another.
- Snapchat’s total funding so far to just under $648m.

It is still a new and growing company but looking at the statistics it's evident that it's doing very well, if i was able i would venture in to the company, because it appears to be a sure thing, However the ideas to make the app a music app or add music to it may make it seem that they are doing to much to become a social networking site right now its unique and new and it excites us however adding these features may make seem boring and like every other social site
