Google waited six months to tell WikiLeaks it passed employee data to FBI

Google’s executive chairman, Eric Schmidt
Last month Google had cooperated with federal agents after the search giant was served with secret warrants demanding that it hand over all emails and IP addresses relating to three WikiLeaks staffers and is now facing renewed questions about its handling of subscribers’ private information following the revelation that it waited six months after the lifting of a gagging order to alert WikiLeaks that emails and other data belonging to its employees had been passed to the FBI. The warrants named the British citizen Sarah Harrison; senior WikiLeaks editor Joseph Farrell and the spokesperson for the organisation, Kristinn Hrafnsson.

This week it was announced that Manning, who is serving a 35-year sentence for the leak in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, will write an opinion column for the Guardian.

No More Page 3 Campaign

1)Who started it and why?
Lucy-Anne Holmes is the fonder on the No More Page 3 Campaign she started it in 2012 and now has over 170,000 signature from supporters over online and public petitions, she started the petition when she realised that the biggest image of a female in the paper was a naked women.

2) What are the six reasons the campaign gives for why Page 3 has to go?
The idea for the page came too in the 'sexist' 1970s and states that a lot has changed over the last 30+ years in society

Its soft porn that is being exposed to children as a family newspaper and up until 2003 the models used were only 16 and were dressed up in school attire

It objectifies women showing men in clothes working and providing and women naked on page 3

because children have access to the newspaper at a young age they learn from an early age that naked women are a normality and objectification is embedded in to their minds, the article refers to common lined men throw around to sow objectification,"I'd do that" or "look at the tits on that".

The Sun's largest image in the paper shows a woman of a certain age, race and physicality which sends a message that women serves a sexual purpose to men which is rubbish.

Stories that the Sun run about rape, sexual abuse, harassment, domestic violence or online porn is contradicted by Page 3 stating if personified would say "Shut up and, girl, and get your tits out".

3)What are Barbara Ellen and Susan Boniface's contrasting opinions in the debate?
Susie Boniface stated that the newspaper was outdated, She also states that in the 70s it was hard to come by images of naked women and there for back then created an audience Boniface said that the newspaper was tasteless, demeaning and unnecessary.

Barbara Ellen  stated the the campaign shouldn't be abandoned because The Sun decided to run a last minute image for page 3."If page 3 was dreary, sated and offensive before, now it sits like a pathetic leering bare-breasted wolly mammoth amid modern enlightened sensibilities".

4) How can the No More Page 3 campaign be linked to the idea of post-feminism?
The idea of post-feminism suggest that it's no longer needed as it's movement has been successful, however the campaign shows that the movement is still in the work as feminists are still tackling the objectification of women in 21st Century Media. On the other hand the tackling lesser important subject like this instead of numbers of women politicians would suggest that the movement is coming to an end as the subject isn't drastically important for feminism.

5) What are your OWN views on the No More Page 3 campaign. Do you agree with the campaign's aims? Should the campaign continue?
I don't see the point in this because for the models it's a job that they enjoy and the campaign is taking that from them. If the idea of feminism is to make women feel empowered and the models say this area of employment does exactly that for them, to me it means that they're in fact reversing the impact that feminism has had over the years. If they idea of these objectifying themselves is irritating I would suggest instead of removing it use Page 4 to show an image of a women with a STEM job.

6) Do you agree that we are in a post-feminist state or is there still a need for feminism?
I feel that there is still a need of feminism as occupations of women is still an issue and instead of preaching to the elderly, who are set in their ways, teach the meaning of feminism to the future generations so objectification of women when seen by these children doesn't give them the idea the women has a place in society.

MM40: Feminism

1) Read Playing With The Past: Post-feminism and the Media (MM40, page 64 - our Media Magazine archive is here).

2) What are the two texts the article focuses on?

Beyonce - Why Don't You Love Me & Pan Am

3) What examples are provided from the two texts of the 'male gaze' (Mulvey)?

The way Beyonce objectifies her self for the male gaze as she dresses as a 50s housewife in the music video.

4) Do texts such as these show there is no longer a need for feminism or are they simply sexism in a different form?

I do think that feminism is still need but in the areas that matter campaigns such as 'Free the Nipple' supported my Miley Cyrus aren't needed and are irrelevant the focus needs to be on job pay or maternity leave because these are what matter the most currently

5) Choose three words/phrases from the glossary of the article and write their definitions on your blog.

Patriarchy - An ideology that places men in a dominant position over women

Third wave Feminism - Was a movement that redefined and encouraged women to be dominant and sexually assertive

Post-Feminism - An ideology in culture and society that society is somehow past needing feminism and that the attitudes and arguments of feminism are no longer needed.

Revenge porn victims’ helpline launched in UK

A helpline for victims of revenge porn has been launched as part of a concerted push to tackle the growing problem of explicit photographs being shared online without the victim’s consent. It will offer support to victims who are affected by the crime, which can affect people as young as 11. Perpetrators of revenge porn in the UK will face prison sentences of up to two years under a new measure in the criminal justice and courts bill that bans the distribution of a private sexual image without their perrmisson to distribute.

around 30 sites “specialised” in revenge porn content used in the UK alone.

Folami Prehaye, founder of the revenge porn support website voic.org.uk, said that as a victim she had been embarrassed to let other people know what had happened to her.

Last week a man who ran a “revenge porn” site was convicted of identity theft and extortion in California. He faces up to 20 years in prison after being convicted on 27 charges

About 10,000 pictures were posted on the site, alongside contact details, links to Facebook and Twitter profiles and details about victims’ places of work.

Google Maps: a decade of transforming the mapping landscape

10 years ago people would have to typing a postcode into Multimap, printing out step-by-step instructions and then enduring amateur navigation from your partner in the passenger seat or find their way using a book. Google Maps have become the de facto interface between the the physical and the digital world. This article displays the vast difference the internet has had on maps and conveniences by enabling applications to be used everywhere.

While Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s nascent world wide web supported the first online maps in 1993

In 2004, Danish brothers Lars and Jens Eilstrup Rasmussen went to Google with an idea for a web app that would not only display static maps, but provide people with a searchable, scrollable, zoomable map.

Rupert Murdoch's grandson launches an audio news app

Rupert Murdoch’s grandson, James MacLeod, is following in the family footsteps as co-founder of a new news app called Clippet, It’s an audio news service that offers their target audience - “millennials” (aka 18 to 28-year-olds) - quick-fire stories on mobile lasting approximately a minute. MacLeod and Grace Regan, both aged 23, launched Clippet last September, but Murdoch’s News Corp has not provided any of the funding.

“I wanted something that would give me short summaries of news I was interested in, which would let me dive in deep if I wanted”.

Unlike BuzzFeed, Vox and Vice, which are all increasingly investing in original journalism, Clippet summarises the main issues of the day reported elsewhere in what is thought to be an accessible way.

Does it offer a positive or negative view of British Muslims? To what extent does it reinforce or challenge Edward Said's theory of Orientalism - that the west is superior to the exotic or uncivilised east?

Yasmin offers different type of views of Muslims. The beginning shows a positive ideology, a boy call to prayer in Arabic (Azaan) portraying them as peaceful people, however when the caucasian people begin to move away presenting the Muslim as disruptive. The elderly man is cleaning “Paki, Go Home” off the shutter shows them as docile and to emphasis on the positive attribute portrayed in the eastern communities in Yasmin They refuse to retaliate even tho they know they aren't welcome in their arera. The theory of Orientalism, that the west is superior to the east as the womas well as refusing to retaliate.
